Ernie Ball Accessory Kit
Packaging for the speculative product Ernie Ball Accessory Kit, a collection of essential guitar accessories for beginner players. Packaging transforms into a tabletop music stand, which aims to promote proper playing posture. The packaging design was created to align with Ernie Ball’s current brand identity of innovation, expression, and accessibility. The limited, bold color palette evokes the strength and energy of guitar-playing, and the typefaces are expressive yet approachable. Imagery is kept to a minimum, leaving room for color and typography to lead.
Development & prototyping
A moodboard was firstly created to take gather visual inspiration from existing Ernie Ball visual identity. This helped with the following steps of exploring header & body typefaces, selecting color directions, and noting the labeling requirements that would need to be accounted for while designing the product packaging.
The prototyping process consisted of both paperboard hand-crafted models, as well as laser-cut models via a 60-watt Universal VLS4.60 Laser System, courtesy of the Fabrication Lab (FLab) for the SDSU School of Art and Design. This greatly helped with creating precise, 1:1 scale models of packaging possibilities, and this newfound familiarity with the laser-cutting process led to the laser system being used for the final prototype model.
